The Rotosound stainless steel strings I have on my P-Bass are 16 years old. I get compliments on my sound alot, so they must still ok.

I rarely change strings, so if I take a set off, they are pretty much trashed. I cut the ball end off and use the rest of the string as cable or a drain cleaning tool or something. Everything gets used a few times around here before it goes to the landfill.

The only take-offs I have are rounds, since I install flats and never change them. I discard the rounds.

I should pick up a spare set of flats, but I've never had a bass string break in 40 years and I bring a backup bass to gigs.

Surprised no one put this link out there. I don't know them and can't vouch for them but I did recently pack and send a box of used bass and guitar strings to http://www.darrylpurpose.com/second-strings-project/ at the recommendation I found on another TB link.

This is my 2 liter string bottle from when I was in high school...

I also used to cut the tuning post coiled part off and have them hanging down from my door way like a curtain...

I soak them as well, once they are dead, as dead I toss them.

I tried to use an old E string as a weed eater line once. The string came apart after 30 seconds, and I'm probably lucky I didn't hurt myself.

Wow. how often does a guy that owns a string business change his strings?

I too save my strings but for a year at a time, then recycle with other stuff. I have removed the ball ends from every set of strings I have strung up. All totaled it is 5/6th of a medium-small mason jar. I have made jewelry a few times and donated to a few dozen to hipsters over the years to do the same thing. Upright ball ends for ear gauges for band mates, or sinker weights for fishing.

You do NOT want to know....

That bottle is from 1996-1998 when I was playing with my old band... I didn't put all of my strings in there... I would change them before every gig back then... The bottle is old, and has this crazy odd alcohol smell to it!

You can see mostly Ken Smith strings in there, the Green silk I believe are first gen Elixir, and the Blue might be Blue Steels... I did have Ernie Ball flats on a bass back then but don't think those are them in there...

Jeebus Jason. Your stockpile has mine beat. Have you considered giving those a good long DA soak and selling them on your site somewhere or donating them to local high schools for their music programs?

Dude. MacGyver got a hold of you? That's a great idea, but oh my god, that was a bad result
