Question What flats have a similar feel to Lo-riders?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been using DR Lo-riders on my jazz bass and wanna put flats on it to record our album in August. I want something with a similar tension to the Lo-riders. What flatwounds would be a good choice?

Sadowsky and Lakland flats are both about the same tension as 45-105 lo riders. Maybe slightly higher.

D'Addario Chromes seem to have more of a similar tension to rounds than other flats I've tried.

+1 to Chromes. I just put a set of Chromes on my P-Bass a couple weeks ago, and I couldn't tell the difference between them and the EB Slinkys I had on.

+4 on chromes

In fact I took a new pair of D'adarrio Nickle Lt top Med bottom rounds off my bass and put a set of chromes on - And I had nearly no change in action on the bass.

Which is a plus because i have to take the freaking neck off everytime I setup the bass.

So the Chromes would be a nice choice for my fretless Q5?

Whoa. .132 B string? Kinda huge there.

That's not large at all .135" is pretty standard for B strings.

Huh. I usually stick to my .125's, so I guess I'm new to this one.

I say go for a different feel, man-- if you're looking for something to change up your sound a little, maybe something that feels a lil' different under your fingers.

It might take you to different melodic and rhythmic places. You never know!

What gauge of chromes are people using that are the same as rounds?

I've found the 45-100's are about the same as the 50-105s.

I put a set of Chromes 45-100 on there, and it's a little stiffer than my Lo-riders, but I like them. I can't wait for them to break in a little more to see how they end up sounding on my J.

In my experience the Chromes usually loosen up after a week or so.
