At what gauge do strings stop having an outer shell?
At what gauge are the strings just the core?
As far as I'm aware all bass strings have both core and winding.
It's only guitar strings that are core-only on the smaller ones.
We (GHS) have a couple plain steel strings (no wrap), and they're an .018 and .020, both of which are used either in a piccolo bass set or for a high F string.
Largest Plain Steel strings I have seen are .026p
They are a guitar string though. They can be made in bass length but not sure how useful they would be.
The other way around the smallest wound string I have seen (steel core) is .017w
.008-.023 - bass ball-ended
