What Gauge Sadowsky Flats for Ibby 5?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm considering putting some Sadowsky flats on my SR505. I currently have the stock Elixers on which have a .130 B. This gauge works well however, I'm hearing that the Sadowsky flats run on the stiff side and I was wondering if I should go for the .125. If you have experience, let me know. Kind of like Goldilocks with the porridge I want my B not too floppy and not too stiff... but just right. I play finger style, no particular genre.

Most flats are going to feel stiffer than regular rounds... The exception to the rule are T-I Jazz Flats, they can feel lighter than some rounds!!

As far as the Sadowsky flats, if you are worried about them being to stiff you almost need to go with the .040-.100 set which are still going to have the great flatwound attack and definition to their sound. In a 5 string, there is only the 40-100 w/ 125 B string.

Don't worry... the .125 B is not going to be floppy with that string.

It appears there is the 130 option too

Thanks SLaPiNFuNK,
The .125 Sounds like a good option. Is there a dissenting opinion out there from the great Talkbass wisdom thinktank?

Not a fiver player but I'd like to congratulate you in your choice of flats. They are one of my favorite string sets by a mile.

On a bass with such a slim neck, I would go with the light set. Not for fear of neck damage but because those Ibanez necks are made for speed.

Sadowsky flats are very nice strings. Good choice for that bass.
