Question What to get? Rounds, Flats, half rounds, or something else? & a guage ?

I've been continually using standard Ernie Ball regular slinky round wound strings, gauge: 50-70-85-105. Only because I don't have the money to try something different that may cost me $20-$40 and have me left being stuck with them because I tried something new and it didn't work out. But the issue is and I'm sure its because there standard $20 strings is that they just don't feel great to my fingers, there a little rough. Now I don't know if there are expensive round wounds out there that may feel more comfortable but I'd think there would be. And I've heard that flats feel really comfortable, but have a dull tone and aren't very good for slap. And how are half-rounds? What are nylon strings like? So the main thing I'm looking for is something comfortable that is still a bright round wound. How good are standard Warwick strings? And the last question is how much of a difference would there be in dropping from the gauges 50-70-85-105 to 45-65-80-100?

Its a lot to read, but I'd appreciate any help.

Look for sales, special prices online, you'll save plenty on strings...experiment with different strings, read posts by some of the players that have played RW and flats for 20-30 years, you'll pick up some ideas before spending money. See the post on this forum called: Flats are not for everyone.

Are flat rounds smoother feeling than round wounds?

I found the difference in switching from 50 gauge to 45 really big! Especially when slapping, the 45 set just feels right to me.

Flatwounds are smooth and feel tighter where roundwounds are rough and feel like lower tension. Main difference is flats sit very well in the mix, but may sound a bit dull on itself. Rounds sound more like a guitar with more bite and growl but may have to battle with guitars and cymbals to be heard in the mix.

Comfortable, bright roundwound? Try DR - I haven't seen a lot of people who really didn't like their strings. Lowriders, High Beams or Fat Beams may be something for you. I personally love the Fat Beams and for a mellower sound Sunbeams.
