What is "growl"

Looking for folks to explain what "growl" means to them. A lot of the string discussions mention "growl" and I've never quite understood what that meant. Thanks!

There's different kinds.

There's your midrange boosted clean bridge pickup kind of Jaco growl...

And then there's your slightly overdriven tube amp fuzzy Ampeg kind of growl.

But of course, theres a million other kinds, but those are the two archetypal kinds that people usually refer to, I use em as reference points, because most growliness is some kind of offshoot of one of those...

I think growl refers to a strong midrange attack. When you pluck the string and all the right overtones are present.

Excellent question!

The answer is: NOBODY KNOWS.

Ask 5 people and they'll give you completely different answers.

I personally recommend using more descriptive words to describe tone eg:

Lots of treble with a bit of overdrive - Clank
Mostly bass with no treble - Dubby
Lots of punchy low mids - Thump

It's fun!

Capn - thanks for posting that link and saving the guy a search...

Otherwise Growl is what the dawg in my avatar does if you try to touch that bass, or her bones...

This description comes closest to what I had in mind. I might also describe it as "bite", or in SansAmp BDDI terms - "Presence".

I think I agree w/DaveF here, given how many different thoughts there seem to be on "growl". Maybe the term is a bit too subjective ?
