I swear I searched but couldn't find anything. Anyhow, I want to try some new strings on an essex but don't want to file/clearance/enlarge anything and I haven't been able to find what gauge they come with stock or how thick you can go up to stock. Any help would be appreciated. |

I just got a SPJ-62 recently (first bass for me) and I initially replaced the stock strings with a set of Ernie Ball Regular Slinkys (.050, .070, .085 & .105) and they fit fine, but I don't believe that the next gauge up would fit the stock nut without filing some of the slots. And FWIW I didn't care for the sound and feel of the bass with the EB Slinkys. I just swapped those out for a set of D'Addario EXL 170 Lights (.040, .065, .080 & .100). These fit the nut perfectly and sound great. Hope this helps.

I have a J bass that accepts standard-gauge strings no problem, but a P with a very narrow hole in the bridge that a .105 just barely fits through with a lot of tugging. Generally, though, I think you'll be pretty safe with a 40-100 or 45-105 set.

I tried a 110 once to accommodate Drop D tuning and it was a mother getting the string through the bridge! I did it eventually, but it was more trouble than it was worth!

Yeah, I forgot about that aspect. The .105 was just barely able to fit through bridge for me too. Excellent point.
