What guage strings would you recomend for Drop C (C G C F)? I like DR high beams because I have some lights (40-100)on my jazz bass that is tuned in E and they seem nice. Dr high beams only go up to 45-105 I think though, do you think I would need a heavier guage than 45-105 for a deep grindy metal tone? BTW it is an Ibanez SR400
thanks

55-110
by the way: it's spelled "gauge," not "guage."

i used that set with some success on a spector ns4crfm with the same tuning...the only reason i didn't like them was that they were steel strings and i prefer nickel |

| | | | I'm using DR Lo-Riders .105-.045 + .030 for my 5-string tenor fretless...when I tune down to C# (1.5 full steps down) the string tension is still relatively tight, but not as tight as it is in E. Try to get something with a hex core - the tension on them is higher than on a round core (Hi-Beams, Roto Swing 66s, I think D'Addario ProSteels) |

Doesn't DR pack custom sets?

Definitely the best for metal in my opinion. Depending on the bass and action and how adept you are with your dynamics you can get a growly deep sound, rumbly/rattle tone, or zingy clear tone without changing any settings.

Except, if you use the same bass to play in both standard and drop-c, intermittently, you'll find the tension way too high in standard. ProSteels are a lot like DR Lo-Riders, a bit higher tension and grungier tone than Hi-Beams, which to me felt a bit lighter and more musically bright. |

I liked the EBs a little better on my P-bass, but so far I'm liking the Black Beauties a bit more on my TBC single M. The DR Black Beauties have a bit more midrange grind that I like, since the Single M has a pretty scooped out sound. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
