What happened with Labella Slappers????

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi there!!
Maybe got the wrong ones, dunno.....or maybe they changed the type of strings....... But the thing is that I got fairly confused when last week I bought 2 packs of Labella SLAPPERS 45-128 (5 string), SN45B, and found out that these where not tappered core strings anymore....only the B string! Been buying these strings for a long time ´cause they suit my stile, sound, and setup, and suddenly they change!!!???

Finding out that these were no tappered strings anymore, I had to re-setup one of my Sadowskys.....and I´m gonna have to do the same for the rest of my basses! (I use these strings in all of them).

I really love these strings, and I think that are the best ones......but I kinda liked the tappered ones more.......

Does anyone there know whats going on??? Need info pleez!!!

Thx folks!!.- JC

Aren't the tapered ones Super Steps? Is this what you were wanting?

No, Super Steps have exposed core and are Stainless Steel, and Slappers are tappered core Nickel Plated.

As far as I´m concerned, Slappers used to come with D-A-E-B tappered strings. But not anymore???

Thx anyway!

Can anybody confirm that Slappers aren't tapered anymore? These are my favorite strings :-(

I was wondering the same thing. I thought these were the greatest strings, but the set I received last week were different, without the taper. Also, they were on back-order for a while from juststrings. Very disapointing.

Have you installed them? How do they sound?

Also, does anybody know any other 0.128-0.130 nickelwound string sets that are tapercore on all strings?

Slappers delight!!!!

The truth is that I can´t really tell the difference.....maybe a subtle one, but after a while you get used to the new setup. It´s a matter of trying to get to the same string height that you had with the tappered ones.......but that means messing around with the bridge each and everytime you change from taper to normal strings. (I have to change strings very, very often ) The sound is there...and the strings for me are the best!

I just wanted to know if this change in the strings is gonna stay like that
Does anyone know?? I sent a mail to LaBella, but still no reply. Maybe Xmas Hollidays, or too much work.....I´ll be waiting. As soon as I get a response I´ll let u guys know!!!

Cheers!!

I just got a pack of hard rockin steels that has a non tapered E, so it sounds like they changed up the program. I'm bummed, this E is either a bad string, or is just nowhere near as growly as the tapered one was.

I´m sure you also lowered the E string saddle to meet the same string action as the tapered you had.....
Most of the times the "Growl" factor has to do with the strings with low action. Also theory says that tapered strings, apart from lowering the action, react quicker than non tapered ones!

I guess that this is a very subtle thing......

Yep, I dropped the saddle. This E is really thuddy. I think it may just be a bum string.

I have two and a half boxes of the tapered Slappers.
I do not use them anymore and would be willing to sell to anyone who wants a set.

I wrote Labella concerning this a while ago as I was confused myself after buying 2 sets that had at least the B-E-A tapered but got another set shortly after with only the B tapered.

They told me it was normal as they had recently changed their machinery and that from now on the sets would only have the B tapered, maybe the E as well. Not sure about which strings exactly as I don't have his response anymore but all in all, they changed it.

About a year ago I ran into this when ordering a set of SN45CB (6-string set). What I found, however, was that my previous orders were all SN42CBs, which includes the tapering as previously found. It's not found in their catalog, but you can contact your local dealer to see if you can get them. Just a word of caution, though...it may take a very long time to get them, if it's even possible anymore.

I've used Pedulla Nickels (and Steels) which are taperwound except for the G/C strings. All in all they're the best taperwound strings I've ever tried; great tone/feel, no weird overtones or intonation issues.

However, it's been at least a year since I bought them, and I thought they were made by LaBella, so it's possible they're no longer tapered. Hmm...

The last set that I bought in January (at Rudys in NYC) was tapered.
Did they change their production technique?
