Currently just changed from DR Nickel Lowriders to DR Nickel Sunbeams and I REALLY LOVE the playability of the Sunbeams! Noticeable difference in tension due to Sunbeams roundcore vs. Lowriders hexcore.
I've played Fender, Ernie Ball, Rotosound and GHS in the past. IMO I think DR is just a better sounding, feeling and playing string...but then again...I've not tried every string on the market.

Orange nickelwounds on my fretless four
and Ernie Ball regular slinky roundwounds on my fretted 4
I haven't gathered a preferance for strings much yet, i just like to play .
I have never played flatwounds outside of a store so I dont have any real idea what they sound like. Maybe if/when I get a six string fretless I'll try some, but that won't be for quite a while. |

I just wasn't happy with their sound or feel on a new bass (Brubaker) that came with SIT strings. At first I wasn't happy with the stock strings but after putting on the Hi Beams I was wishing I had stuck with them. After looking around at a local store I tried a Dean Markley SR2000 set and have been very pleased. I am not sure about life yet but they feel great and sound very nice as well. I plan on restringing my Lakland and FBB basses as well with them to see if I like them across the board or if its something particular about the Brubaker. |
