What kind of strings do you use on your Ric's?

I was wondering what kind of strings you use on your Ric. Because quite frankly, I don't have the slightest clue what you would use.

What would happen if you put flats on it? Has anyone done this?

I used Roto's when I owned a 4003.

I also put a set of Daddario ProSteels on it too, matched the bass well.

McCartney put flats on his Ric. And it sounded beautiful.

This is very true, I wonder if I would have kept my Ric if I put flats on it.

Stock Ric strings are nickle rounds .105, .075, .055, .045 (the reason for the odd guage says Ric CEO John Hall is even tension balance). You can buy them on Ric's website store or at PickOfTheRicks.com.

Other nickle rounds to try are D'Addario or DR Sunbeams.

Thomastick Infeld jazz flats are very popular too.

I am using Chromes, 040/095, on a Rick 4001S, and the sound is fantastic. Its the first time im satisfied with the sound of flats on a live enviroment, playing in a amateur rock band with 2 guitars. The bass just found its place in the mix, and the timbre is amazing, clear, smooth and beautiful. I used before on this bass Pro Steels and Ernie Ball nickles, but the Chromes are, by far, better!

Attached is a sound file with my (fretless) Rick 4001 with flats. I play four different segments

Kansas (Wayward Son)
Rush (Tom Sawyer)
Iron Maiden (Trooper)
Walking Blues

Ric Sound File 1.mp3

All the sound files are straight into my recorder so there's no EQing or effects happening (other than a little compression on Maiden).

I also have a Fender J Bass with Rounds. I would personally choose the J Bass for Rush & Maiden (because I would want the Rounds for Rush and the Frets for Maiden. Not because of the brand of bass) I would however stick with my Ric for Kansas and definitely any blues.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Dammit, that didn't help me at all - that's the way I want my rick to sound (but of course mine is fretted so).....

All that did was make my 4003FL GAS worse, thanks a lot

I use Rotosound Jazz flatwounds on mine.

You can hear it on the first track "Hummin It". The second track is a P-Bass with flats.

Any good set of round wound strings will work just fine.

Rotosounds usually whether it be rounds or flats.
Flats do really sound awesome on a Ric, they tone down that Ric snarl and change the character quite a bit.
Depends on what sort of music you play
