What type of strings would be best for these sounds? I'm either going to be playing out of a marcus miller, Geddy lee, Or american jazz. And which string companies do you guys prefer and for what reasons?

I would concentrate more on the processing and distortion. You might want to look into a VT Bass pedal and maybe an extra heavy pick.

Agreed. Or a $100 bass with old strings through a 20 watt amp, miked and recorded into the red. It wouldn't matter. You like the music so you like the sound. But the sound is essentially distortion.

You're going to be fine with almost any roundwound (I prefer Blue Steels on my Yamaha), but I would think you'd want to consider the tension more than the brand of string. You need something that will give you the fast response that is necessary in that music to provide a tight, compacted, yet dense low-end and be able to definably lock up with the kick. |

In all seriousness though, it's not really going to matter as long as you have a round wound string and some distortion. Like someone else reccomended, the vt bass will do wonders, I can cop a sound like that for when I sub in for a Japanese rock band that's really power chord and palm mute oriented. While I may not like the style of music... It gets the bills paid.

| | | | What folks are saying makes sense. But we can still tweak the sound for the bass a bit with string choice. Id go with DR neons or Rotosound swing66 for this sort of stuff myself. Solid hard articulate distinct sound that works well in the mix. With a nice metallic edge. I like crunchy added for bass with this kind of music. The new DR neons and of course Rotosound swing 66 work great in that imo.

| | | Do something really radical and try playing a tuba distorted. I bet it would sound wonderfully metal and you wouldn't have to worry about strings! |
