What kind of strings give an acoustic bass the most volume?

Sign in to disble this ad
As a fun summer project, i'm making a "junk" bass to play acoustically with friends, especially for camping, as everyone else is a way better guityarist than i am. I'm taking this dude's idea ( ‪Black Sabbath - Ironman on home made bottle bass guitar‬‏ - YouTube ) and making my own take on it.

It SOUNDS like homeboy is just using some roundwounds... but i've never played an acoustic bass before... rounds? Flats? Nylons? I just want to get the most volume i can

Round round phosphor bronze strings will give the most volume. Try D'Addario EPBB170, I used 'em for years.

I've changed to GHS 3060 nylon tape-wound strings for their great "upright-like" tone, but they aren't very loud.

Yes round wound phospher bronze for best volume. Rotosound makes some to, the bronze bass44's.

I've been using DR Rare Phosphors on my Takamine, plenty of volume and good feel as well. Gotta try out those Rotosounds as well...

Phosphor Bronze strings...

A bunch of different manufacturers make them, nearly all in one form or another.

D'Addario makes an EXP Coated Phosphor Bronze as well as their regular Phosphor Bronze strings.
