What's the most you have spent on a set, and can you tell the difference? |

Yes the are worth it.
Pyramid Gold Flats aren't much cheaper, never used them though.

And a bass with low sustain might not let you notice an increase in a strings sustain-ability. Et cetera.
I'm very under-informed on Roundwounds; added cost might result in added string life. Or might not. Anyone know? |

Nope, don't need higher end gear to appreciate a difference, so many variables in the sound production chain, though..... |

I notice a much lower output from the PG's, but the balance is amazing, as is their smooth feel ... I have never really had a very high end bass, but I think that the strings make a noticable difference on the lower to middle $$ range basses ... JMHO

I keep switching between those and a set of dean markley blue steel NPS. I figured these were expensive lol...
I'm tempted to try a set of those TI flats. |

It is very easy to tell the difference between SS rounds, flats, and TI flats even on cheap basses assuming the pickup isn't total mud. |

| | | | $30 for DR neon 4string set. Bout $5 more then my previous fave strings Rotosound swing66 which are norm $25 set 4string. Those being a few dollars more then most roundwound strings but worth it sound wise. I know peeps spend a lot more for flats. But the lifetime of flats generally a few yrs or more makes yearly string maintanance lower then roundwound string users. So while roundwound users spend less per set their yearly cost for strings is ussually going to be a good deal higher then flats users. I'm sure theres exceptions, but overall for the majority of peeps. Lol.

What you really pay for is small vs. large numbers, transport and off course some oddity's in materials like in gold plated strings.
Over here in Europe prices are really different than in the US.
For instance: the highly acclaimed TI set you back €38,-, while the La Bella Jamersons are €54. The Optima Chromes are €25 and the d'Addario Chromes are €32,-.
Fender probably has the best distribution network since their strings are cheap in Europe as well.
Allmost every manufacterer I know make decent bass strings, so the difference in quality will be subtile (O.K. exclude the crap stings from this theory ).
On the other hand: with the difference in taste you can fill a complete forum.
Relative to the bass and amplification, the strings are allways cheap. And since they have a large impact on the sound, specially when you play with a rather 'natural' sound, I think there is no reason to make a price dependant choice of strings (Unless your everage string lifespan is 3 hours ). |
