Question What is the "quietest" roundwound with respect to finger noise?

Hello all,

In your experience (as mine is very limited!), what is the "quietest" roundwound string you've tried with respect to finger noise/finger squeek (whatever you want to call it)?

I'm really looking for opinions on roundwounds only (not flats, grounds, pressure wounds or coated strings). I know there must be a difference from brand to brand in how tight the winding is (ie: some roundwounds feel smoother than others, some are quite coarse in comparison). I hope this question makes sense. I did a topic search and couldn't find any info on this specific question.

I don't have an answer other than to suggest that you might rethink your question. The tone available from the different string types have some overlap. As such, why wouldn't you play a ground, pressure wound or coated string that feels smooth and still sounds the way you want it to?

I guess my point is that most people are looking for a tone and a feel which leads to a string type. It's clear you're looking for something quiet, but understanding more about what you're seeking may lead to better recommendations.

The two smoothest roundwounds that I know of are the TI SuperAlloy and the TI Jazz Rounds. They use a small diameter winding on both so there is no noise, no squeak.

I'm waiting for a set of DR Sunbeams which I'm told are also smooth.

Hope that helps a little.

Thank-you Gene. That's the kind of feedback/info I was looking for. I've heard that before about the TI Jazz Rounds. I think I'll give them a whirl....

Most welcome Bob,

Just remember that the Jazz Rounds are very light tension and 100% pure nickel.

The SuperAlloys are a more "normal" tension and made with an iron/nickel alloy.

Both are very smooth.

Sunbeams, nickle Lo Riders and the D'Addario nickle rounds. THink you'll like the 'Beams. They may be the smoothest I've played ( small sample though! )

I'm currently a TI Jazz Flats user but from what I remember La Bella's Deep Talking Bass roundwounds were noticeably quieter (as concerning finger/frets noise) than all the other roundwounds brands/types I've experienced. They're also quite flexible and warm sounding for a stainless-steel string ...
However I want to add that fretting hand's tecnique plays its role.

All rounds have that patented roundwound sound...some more than others but none that i feel are alot less noisey by that much. Chapstick, greasy fingers and good old sweaty hands and dirt get em quiet the quickest....unless you play SIT silencers like me then you get close to a roundwound sound as possible with a low noise compression wound string.
