DRs are designed for extra long. I string through the body and there is plenty of string at the headstock left.

If you want to string through the bridge, then most any extra long scale string will work fine. If you want to string through the body, then you're choices are much more limited. DR Hi-beams, Lo-Riders (SS and Nickel), Sun-beams, Fat-beams, and Long-necks will all work. So will Lakland SS and Nickel strings. I prefer Hi-beams on my DJ5.

XL TI Jazz Flats will go through the body with no problem.

Lakland's strings 0f course work. DR do also. My 55-01 has a set of DR Hi-Beams with the biggest B I could get, non-tapered. I like it a LOT better than the tapered stings I've used.

They have offered daddarios, so I think I'll go extra long scale, but tapered???

You'll have to run those through the bridge, so don't get tapered strings. I'm not sure how long the taper is, and if it extends out to far toward the bridge pickup, they'll cause bad intonation problems.

Dj5 strings

Hiya

thanks for helping on that topic. You are also a tc elec user? Good choice!

I emailed lakland and they said the extra long scale daddarios will go through the body, but I'd have to get a separate tapered b.

What would you recommend? Just go normal scale through bridge? Extra long scale through bridge? Or extra long scale body?

Cheers!

Gareth

No difference in routing through the bridge vs. the body that I have been able to tell on any of the 5 Laklands I've owned. If I'm using a taper string, I usually try to route through the body so that the taper point is closer to the saddles. Depends on where the taper point is though. The nice thing about the Lakland strings is that the taper sits in the perfect spot when you route through the body. I just prefer Hi-beams because of the lower tension, but the Lakland strings sound great.

I had a JO5 for a while. The DR long necks were my favorite on that bass.

Coincidentally, I just found that to be true THIS WEEK before I saw this thread. The B string was too short, had to choose between stringing it through the bridge and the rest through the body or stringing them all through the body of my 55-02; chose the latter.

This thread probably explains the empty Hi-Beams package I found in a box at home. I've been wondering what bass I put them on since I use D'Addarios on everything else. Now I know.
