| What Should I Try?

Since I've finally got a good, reliable four-banger in the house, I feel the need to experiment with strings.
Right now my strings of choice are good ol' D'addario nickel XL's. Tried Prosteels, but they were way too rough. I'd like to stick with nickels for this reason, or find some super smooth steels.
I don't want flats. I do a good deal of slap & pop and tapping, so I need the bite of rounds. Currently it's wearing a cheap-as-dirt set of Hartke's, which are actually a little noisy and rough (lots of finger sliding noise).
The bass is an '81 Peavey T-40, which is a 4-inline headstock and string-through-body only design. I'm going to install a 3-string retainer on the headstock next time I restring.
What strings should I try? I'm playing mostly rock, metal, and progressive/experimental stuff, somewhere between Tool, The Mars Volta and Audioslave. I want a tone that's good for fat fingerstyle, slap & pop, and pick style. Grindy and growly with a long lasting tone.
What strings will fit on this bass that I should give a shot? I'm going to try whatever the people suggest over the course of the next few months. I'd prefer gauges 45-105, or 45-110 (if a 45 - 65 - 85 - 110/115 even exists). Thanks!
