Sadowsky Stainless are great...I use the black labels (flats) with most blues and some rock/R&B. Kinda high cost 48 + shipping.
Another option are Detroit flats from Webstrings. Low cost.

Might D'Addario Chromes work for your sound? Flatwounds, but brighter than average flats.

I didnt realise any SS strings smell bad? . What are you actually asking, I'm guessing you mean you dont like SS strings? So recommend some strings which I like, which is impossible as we are all different.

I actually find SS strings more versatile (versital sorry ) than Nickel, and any make may be worth a go.

Why not try a coated string like DR Extra Life?

I am presently using Pedullas which are a tapered version of La Bella Hard Rockin' Steels. I like the HRS because they have a nice midrange that many steel strings lack and after inital break in they can do the warm thing well with a little treble cut or tone control. They are my favorite steel string. I also like Ken Smith Rock Masters but the B was not as good as La Bella. One of these days I need to try a set of High Beams. After all the strings I have played, somehow I never tried a set of High Beams.

I switched to nickel many years ago because I preferred the tone, but when I used stainless I was fond of Dean Markley Super-Rounds. I think it's their knock-off of Roto-Sound, but I liked them better than the Rotos.

If you find the steels to bright, check out Sadowsky flats. They are a full bodied flat with nice definition. Depending on how bright you like your nickel rounds, you might be able to a nice fat sound with nice high mid content with them.

The "bang for the buck" is a good reason for the Dunlops also.
I read somewhere these were designed to sound more like "nickels" on purpose.
I'm convinced!

Both of The Sadowsky Stainless are good Nickel alternatives.
The Black labels lean a little toward the harpsicord clank tone and the Blues lean a little toward the stringy DR highbeam kind of tone but both are very much in the middle of those two extreams. You're not going to notice a large difference with either as compared to most nickle strings.

IMHO

DRs or Blue Steels are what I usually use.
