What Strings For 35" Scale?

Sign in to disble this ad
Got a new (to me) Lakland Skyline yesterday. Will need strings at some point. Never had a 35" scale bass before. Do you guyz use long scale or extra long scale for these? It has a 3+2 config on the headstock, but string-thru at the body. I'll probably put TIs on it eventually and don't want to waste ~$60...

THANKS!

Jo,
Lakland makes pretty nice strings that will fit their basses and they are pretty reasonable. D'Addario Super Long Scale will also fit. I know this because I use them. DR's will also fit but I don't know which ones.

Hey Joe (where're ya goin' with that gun in your hand),

I bought a Lakland Skyline Joe Osborn 5 last weekend and had the same question. In addition to the D'Addarios, Sadowsky makes a set for 35" scale. I put a set on my JO5 (flatwounds) and like them so far. The gauge and tension seem pretty middle-of-the-road to me; heavier and tighter than TI Jazz flats, but not quite as heavy or tight as the D'Addario Chromes. They haven't broken in or "deadened up" yet, as flatwounds do, but the tone is big and warm, yet still provides good clarity.

I bought them from MyMusicStuff's eBay store (Lakland and Roger Sadowsky were both out-of-stock). MyMusicStuff stocks a tremendous inventory of bass strings. The 2-day air service that Tom normally uses put them in my hands the next day!

Good luck!

As a former 55-94 Deluxe owner, I must say that the best strings I ever used were Lakland's own. If you plan on stringing through the body, look no further.

I believe that all DR strings are made long enough to fit 35" scale basses. I know this because I own a 35" bass and I play DR strings almost exclusively.

+1

When I had 35" scale basses (JO5 and a Modulus Q5), DR strings were the easiest to get around here without ordering and they sounded great and lasted a long time.

I used to own a Stingray 5. And AFAIK, Stingrays are 34" scale, and not string through.

I use Ernie Ball strings on my USA Peaveys that are 35" scale. They work fine. I have always used them because I like standard gauges for BEAD and a light G.

Another question egarding the Sadowsky Flats:

The B is tapered. How does that line up at the bridge saddle when mounting thru the body? THANKS!

Laklands come from the factory with a taper B strung through the body. Should line up just fine.

I contacted Fodera and was told they don't make flatwounds. Sorry if I didn't make that clear in my original statement (that I'm looking for flatwounds). Lakland sez it'll be a month before they get more Joe Osborns. Sadowsky looks like the front runner of options right now, but I might wait for the JOs. Still accepting recommendations, if there are more out there...

gotcha.....ya..the foderas are rounds....Sadowsky flats are great sounding. I just took a set off of my other 5 string...34" scale though, but had plenty of string on there (would probably fit a 35") Labella flats in XL fit... I had a set of XL tapewounds on my 55-02 for a while when it was fretless and they were strung thru body. The B string was a little short though..i.e. the silk wrap at the end was right on the nut...Happy string hunting though..I hope you find ones that work for you...

Tapewounds crossed my mind also. I have them on my fretless Carvin and couldn't be happier. Have never used them on a fretted bass, much less a fiver. Might be worth a try. At the moment, I'm trying to come to grips with the 'floating thumb' technique, so the string change is on the back burner for the time being. Thanks for the additional Sadowsky recommendation...

I'm using Sadowsky SBF45BXLs. As I said, I'm still breaking them in; but I like them so far.
