What Strings on 5 string tuned down on F!

Sign in to disble this ad
I have tuned my bass FCGCF. That means triple drop F+ double drop the rest! Don't ask me, ask my band mates why!!!
So, my low F is unbelievably low and I can't really play right because it's like using spaghetti instead of a string.
If I may ask, what strings should I buy? I guess I need a very thick low one.

Circle K Strings

Look at their tension charts and build a 4 string Drop Tuned set and add the right bridge cable for your top F.

Are they playing 8 strings?? Man that guitard trend has gone crazy lately... The "correct" tuning for drop C would be GCGCF, but I guess they're taking that and still going down further.

Also for anything drop related, look n'further than Circle K. Best there is.

i used a 130 on my b string tuned to A flat, so i will guess 145-150. how are the guitars holding up at F ? must be starting to sound murky and dark that low. i found the looser the string the closer to the bridge in need to play to get good attack.

I use Circle K strings for F#BEA. Gauges for that are .182 .136 .100 .76.

For your tuning, something like .190 .124 .084 .061 .043 would probably work out.

Circle K make the best subcontra strings. Circle K recommend a minimum tension of 30 pounds so choose at least a .174 for the F. Order a drop-tune set for CGCF and a single string for the F.
Nice tuning, consider going all-fifths FCGDA for more range.
