What strings are best for different tones?

I would like to know what kind of strings I should get for either a bright, snappy tone or a duller, thumpy tone.
Thanks for helping.

well i've always been a fan of rotosound strings, the brighter strings they do are probably just the standard swing bass, and for a duller thumpy tone, the flatwounds! or mabey even the steve harris flatwounds, i've always been a fan of his sound.
