Question what strings for this jazz?

Hi everyone! I'm new here so I will first pay my respect to the community and the bass gods. *bow*

I don't play bass but I'm getting my friend one for Christmas.

Its a: SX SJB-57 LPB

I'm getting it on Amazon with an amp. I've done my homework, and it appears that this is the best value for a starter.

I've heard the strings, though, are not the best. So I'd like to replace the stock ones with something better.

Someone on here said they replaced a similar model's factory strings with: Fender Nickelplated Steel Roundwound, Long Scale, 7250M 45-105, Bass Strings

Does this sound like a good replacement? And do you all approve of my selection of guitar for my buddy? Thanks!

OH. Lastly... if anyone could recommend a learner's DVD or book that'd be great!

Much appreciated guys! Please help!

Oh boy yes, the stock strings on the SX's are awful! The 7250 strings are great. I really like them. The SX basses get a lot of praise around here. They're nice basses for someone with a low-budget or just starting out especially.

There are a lot of good DVD's and books out there. I don't know if I can think of just one. Does your friend know how to read music? That might help determine what to get.

+1 on the Fender 7250s. I have them on my Yamaha bass, and they've kept a lot of their "newness" for a long time running. Can't go wrong with that set.

Thanks a ton Wooly! That's the kind of insight you can't find just combing Amazon for books. One question though, are there songs to learn in there? Or is it more like "Bass Zen".

Oh, and I noticed there are several kinds of Fender 7250s, like there is 7250M and L and Ml

does it matter much?

Fender Nickelplated Steel Roundwound, Long Scale, 7250M 45-105, Bass Strings--- are what I'm targeting.

Thanks for the input guys! This forum is really impressive.

The M would be medium, Ml, medium Light, and the L light i assume.
For a .45 gauge you would want medium.
It doesnt matter too much, the heavier the string the less easy it is to bend and the more force it puts on the neck, but the .45 gauge is standard so it should do fine.
by the way, it might also be a good idea to get your friend a tuner, they're pretty cheap, but handy for beginners.
