I would use DR Hi-Beams, or any type of stainless steel string. The upper register clack, especially a pick, is seen as being important to some. What kind of metal sound you want is also important.

Just put some D'Addario Prosteels on my Jazz last night and its amazing how much better it sounds. It will work for metal. I can't wait for band practice later today.

^ this.

Actually, Steve Harris uses flatwounds on his P-bass, but he has a unique touch on his instrument. Really, the brand makes no difference. Steel roundwounds will have a brighter edge than nickel plated strings, but the brightness might wear off quickly.

I've found Dean Markley blue steels, Rotosound Swing bass strings, and Ken Smith Rockers all to be very bright and long lasting steel roundwounds.
