This is the sound I want:

An easily articulated, large, round, warm, and sustained sound, midway between heavy and light.

Please, reasonably priced!

I really like these.

Bottom line: Attack and playing style will determine your sound-IMHO.

I think strings are one of the most subjective pieces of bass equipment, if you can call it that. I find that I tend to like particular strings for particular basses, so it's not like there's one set that's the best. It's what you like for what you are playing.

If you want round and warm, I would suggest a nickel roundwound string. Depending on how warm, you could even go to a flatwound. D'Addario XLs are easily found and relatively cheap.

^+1. I used the XLs for 20 years, until I found DRs.

Strings are not a good place to be pinching pennies though. I recommend DRs, either Low-riders or Sunbeams if you can afford the extra $10 bucks.
