I tried GHS Precision Flats, T.I. JF324's, and "Hofner" strings (made by
Pyramid, I think) on an Ampeg AMB-1 shortscale
The problem with the Ampeg (IMO) was that they used Grover Rotomatic
g**t*r tuners, i.e., they would not accommodate a standard bass strings
thicker core. Come to find out, Hofner "Beatle" basses with those little
pearl button tuners have the same problem. Soooo...Hofner strings are
specially made for these type tuners. I tried a set of the flats from
North Coast Music. If you like Pyramid flats... Just not for me, though.

I ended-up drilling out the tuner holes and sticking in some GB7's
The T.I. JF324's were actually a bit long for a 30" scale. I guess the
wrap could've been trimmed back
Then I tried the GHS Precision Flats. They were good. Just like their
longscale counterparts; medium tension, bright for flats coz of the s/s
outer wrap, etc.
In the end, I put on some DR Sunbeam SNMR-45 Nickel r/w's. They seem
just made for the SMB-4d pickup in the AMB-1. Of the few types I tried,
the combination of the DR's & passive SD MM pup were the loudest. Plus,
they have that "loose" feel of TI's (I got spoiled on w/my longscale basses
)
because of their round core
