What's Everyone Using On Their Fender Jazz?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey All--

I've a Fender American Vintage Series '62 Jazz Reissue w/ Lindy Fralin single coils--best pickups I've ever played. I'm using Fender NPS rounds which are sh**y.

How do Roto rounds sound in A J w/ Fralins?? I do don't think pure nickels would sound as good as steel rounds on a J, tho' I like Fender pure nickel rounds on my P bass.

Thanks in advance

Jazz & P bass

I don't have my Jazz anymore but I have a 1966 Fender P.

Been using TI Jazz Flats and could not be happier if that helps.

If you prefer rounds try TI Superalloy (Iron/nickel mix) Sunbeams (nickel plated steel) or TI Jazz Rounds (pure nickel wrap)

Three good RW strings.

IIRC, I have a set of Ernie Ball Super Slinkies on the MIA Jazz I'm selling. They're bright and aggressive, with good low end, so I like 'em.

Before the Super Slinkies there was a set of Lo-Riders on the jazz. These had great low/low-mid depth, and a very nice slap tone.

I used to use Ernie Ball Regular Slinkies (light gauge) on my MIA Jazz V - but recently I tried D'Addario Nickels... Not so sure I am a fan of them. The strings seem to have flaws along the entire length - they feel like they have places where the 'wind' kinks slightly. It is noticable and I am sure this is not a sign of a good string. So I will probably be returning the the EB Reg. Slinkies.

I have also been hearing a lot of praise for the Labella Deep Talking - nothing but high praise from all who say they use them. I see that they list at $55 for a 5-string set... A bit pricey for me, but they seem to have a lot of supporters.

GHS Bass Boomers on my 62 MIA Jazz, but I have a set of daddario flatwounds I am thinking about putting on there. The Boomers sound great to me though....

Carvin Mediums Nickel roundwounds (040-128) when I'm trying to keep several basses inmy rotation with fresh strings. DR Sunbeams when I'm only using one or two regularly.

Usually the Carvins. I've used them for years and got used to buying them when they sold in three-packs for $40.00.

Carvins loaded on my Fender 50th Anniversary Jazz 5, my MTD 535, my Schecter Deleo 5, and my StingRay 5 right now. Two more packs in the desk.

Oh, and the Fender has Barts in it.

Both my basses are stringed with Snake Oil strings...

GLee Jazz has SL gauge (nickels, 45-65-80-100)

DiPinto Galaxie has CL gauge (nickels, 40-60-80-100)

The DiPinto will be switched over to the SL gauge...I kind of like the meatier D & G strings

Elixir nanowebs. Fender custom shop '60s pickups. Everything else sounds like crap to me. This bass is very picky. It does like chromes, though.

I have a Fender 1979 Unlined Fretless Jazz Bass and though normally flatwounds would be the default choice for a fretless, I found that D'Addario roundwounds actually got better tone and more muah out of the bass itself and it sounds great.

You can't beat vintage =)

oh boy. i think you're gonna get a WHOLE LOT of different answers with that question man!

well, i generally use d'addario xl medium guages. i really like how they feel and the tone i get. but recently i've been converted to DR. i've only tried sunbeams on the jazz but damn did they sound good.

i think another note worthy string for me would be the GHS flea signatures but then i think they're phased out.

I've been really digging the D'addario ProSteels lately, they are on my Sadowsky MV5 and Music Man Stingray. On my 66 jazz I really like the DR Low Riders, and on my Elrick f-less I use the D'addario XL Nikels.
