Bought a HW1 P. Loved the low action and growl.
It came equipped with Fender nickels (45-65-80-100).
Gave Labella Slappers (40-60-80-100) a try and they were great, but developed a fret buzz on the high neck on D and G. I swear I could see a bit more neck relief on that side of the neck that wasn't there previously. I raised the action (exposed core) but couldn't shake the buzz until it was way too high for my tastes. I play close to the bridge and like the action low.
I gave the rod a turn to take away some relief and put on a set of GHS Boomers (45-65-80-100) with the idea of getting back to the gauge and way it felt (and the reason) I originally bought the bass. Again had the buzz and between the necessary high action and high tension of the Boomers, I found myself losing interest in the bass. PLaying was becoming a chore.
So, I threw on a set of Rotosound Funkmasters (30-50-70-90) that I had laying around. Reset the bridge height and I have it not only back, but even better. I can't put the bass down, I love the feel, low action and tension and no buzz.
Only problem is sound. The stainless Rotos died fast and I guess most likely due to gauge have little punch and no growl.
Where would you guys go from here?
I'm not married to the extreme light gauge of the Funks, but love the low tension as well as being able to set the action low. Do I just shoot for nickels in light-medium?
Any low tension nickels you live by?
