I'm looking for a roundwound string for my passive jazz (4 string) which has a really rich sound with lots of complex mids going on. Must also sound good slapped and have a reasonable life.
DR fatbeams?
DR Hi-Beams nickel?
What you think?

What you think? | D'Addario XL Roundwound Nickel mediums sound A+ on my bass with 2 J-stacked HB pickups, but its' not passive.
In comparison to other strings I've had, they speak with very clear mids, lots of character.

I'd go nickels for sweeter highs and smoother feel ( AFAIK nickel hi-beams are actually called sunbeams). I personally don't use DR's much because of their unavailability.

not as brittle on the high end and a lot fuller lows--especially low-mids..They don't eat frets like roto's, and last a LONG time.. Cheap also (very good company IMO) |

1st group- Nickel Roundwound Strings
Elrick NI4M = "Assertive mids"
Everly Superbass = "Strong mids."
GHS Boomer Medium = "Forceful mids"
Knucklehead Doublewide Delux = "growly grinding mids"
Lakland Custom wound Nickel = "assertive mids"
Rotosound Roto Bass = "strong mids"
Zon Utrasonic = "Harmonic richness"
2nd group - Stainless Steel Strings
Black Diamond Stainless Steel Wound = "forceful mids, strong growl"
Dean Markley Blue Steel = "Complex mids"
DR Fat Beams = "articulate and crisp mids"
Rotosound RS66 = "Grindy midrange"
S.I.T. Power Steel Stainless = "strong mids"
To me Rotosound RS66 stainless has the sound you are looking for and are easy to locate. I tried them on a friend's bass. However, they seemed to have a bit more string buzz.
Good Luck on your choice. |

I'd say DR Lo Rider Nickels or DR Sunbeams fit your bill. Since you linked that specific one, and that's Paul Turner, I guess DRs are for you.

Probably Sunbeams or Lo Rider nickels.

Most other nickels I've tried lose the mids as they age, and most steels have less happening in the midrange to begin with. |

| | | | For me it's pyramid strings.
I used to use de angelico for ten years or so until they stopped producing them, but have to say that I could not be happier with those pyramids ( steel) |

I got a set of TI Superalloys on the G&L L2K I bought a while ago here on TB, and they are the best strings I've tried so far. Versatile, "complex mids",as you say, and sounds great for slap as well.
