What's Wrong With My D String?

Sign in to disble this ad
When I pluck all the strings on my bass at once, the E,A, and G strings continue oscillating for a number of seconds; "dying" gradually.

The D string dies fairly fast and abrubtly after a couple seconds. What might be the cause of this?

What kind of bass?

What kind of strings?

How long have they been on?

How long has this been happening?

Does it happen everywhere or at specific frets?

There are a number of things that can cause what you describe, but if you answer these questions, it would help narrow it down.

I have a G&L L-2000. This bass has adjustable pole pieces, and I have made sure that each polepiece is the same distance away from each string.

I am using GHS Boomer 52s.

I have been using this set for the last 6 months, but they still sound quite good.

I just noticed it today, as I boredly ran my fingers over the strings while the bass was sitting it its stand.

The effect is most noticeable on open strings.

well im guessing its not the pickups if the string itself stops vibrating...check your nut and bridge for un-even-ness or defects...

Could you have just one very dead string?
