Hi folks,

I would like some suggestion on new set of strings on my G&L L2500. I'm currently using D'Addario with gauge of .045, but I would like to have a lighter gauge of .040. Hope you guys can help me here.

It's a Tilia back with Ash top, string through body, so I need an extra long scale of strings.

Maple or Rosewood board?

For a Tilia back / Rosewood, I have good success with TI flats and DA XLs.

For my ash body / maple board neither of these were all that great. This bass is thinner sounding. The TI flats were OK but did not seem to be as good as with the other. I am leaning towards trying TI Supperalloys or Fender 7150Ms next.

Mine is a Rosewood fretboard.

I love the tone of DA, but would like to change to a lighter gauge of .040. I browsed DA's website and didn't find a .040 gauge with extra long option.

What is TI and how does it differ from DA? How much is it normally?

Thanks!

TI flats are darker than the DA XLs. If you like to play a lot of notes, they lend themselves well to that. Reduced finger noise and a great rock tone and of course lower tension. I believe the 34" scale will go thru body. I bought the 36" scale which I would not do again because of the thinner E string. At the time I was playing in a church band and needed a more modern sound that eventually led me to switching back to DA XLs. But in a rock / jam band setting they were pretty darn nice.

When I played DA XLs on my Rosewood / tilia, I preferred the 45-65-80-100-130s over the 45-65-85-105-130. The heavier ones were boomy in comparison.

TI Super alloys are not going to reduce your tension. These strings to me have a low mid punch that I have never felt in a round wound. They have a flat like sound but still retain round wound definition if that makes sense.

If you are looking for tension reduction that go thru body, I would experiment with DRs. They all are long enough. Maybe Sunbeams as a starting point. You can buy a 4 string 40-100 set and then add a single B string of 125 or 130 at Just Strings. I have never played Sunbeams on a G&L, but probably will at some point.

Thanks for your valuable input!
Anyway, I'm gonna get a set of Fodera at the moment, as it'll save me a few dollars. I'm a student and a few dollars count.
I'll definitely give TI a try in the future!

Thanks again!!

I love DRs on my L2500, either HiBeams or LoRiders.

When I had one it was strung with TI superalloys, and I thought they were perfect on there. Feel was a softer than an average 45-105 set due to the high flexibility.

My L2K has TI Superalloys on them. First time trying them out due to other G&L fanatics swearing by them. Love the feel and sound. I think I like them even more than the Powerbass strings. Too bad my baby's in the shop now. I only had them on a few days, too.

Do you guys have any idea about Fodera nickel set on L2500? By the way, what's the string length from the string through to the nut? I couldn't take the measurement by myself as it's in guitar store now.
