When strings grow old

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi peers
I have noticed that my most precious basses (aurally transparent as i refer to them) change their sound most drastically to dark and lifeless (compared to their sound with fresh strings), whereas some "lesser" (dare I say) basses are not as dark and lifeless when their strings grow old. What is your experience on both very high end basses and very cheap (or average) ones

I find that the bass, not necessarily the pricebreak does have an effect on string life and tone.

For example, 2 of my basses have the same retail/list price: $2200.

One of them, the strings die right fast. I'm lucky if I get 2 weeks before they turn to mud and feel awful and dead.

The other, can go several months without a problem or loss of tone and feel.

Chalk this one up as another of those mysteries of the bass world.
