what does this actually mean?

do they get an even mellower sound?

even more fatter sound?

even less sustain?

could someone please elaborate?

I agree - YES to all of that stuff. Less sustain, Mellower, fatter and more consistent sound. And they feel better too.

Count me out of the "Never Changes Flats" club. I went 7 years with the same set on my flats bass, and I noticed that I lost that good tone that's really fat but with some definition. All I got was fat and no definition. So I'll probably change them every 2-3 years.
