Question Where can I get a new 8 string set for my Galveston (unpaired)?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought this bass a week or so ago for $200 and it's High C string was replaced with a tightened ## low D. I figured it couldn't be too hard to find a replacement string, little did I know.
-
The tuning is as follows:
F#/Gb, B, E, A, D, G, C(needed), f.
-
Additionally though irrelevant, when trying to remove the knobs for adjustment, I found out that it has a built-in overdrive.
-
Any suggestions as to where I should pursue such a set of strings?

This company make excellent tension-balanced sets: http://circlekstrings.com/store/

They may not work with through-body stringing though, best to contact them to find out.

Circle K specifically says not to use them with thru-body stringing, because the tapers will not line up. I think the Galveston has a top-load option though...right?

Octave4Plus, Circle K, and Conklin all make 8-string sets. After shipping, it will be just shy of $100 per set.

FunkMetalBass is correct, sorry. Circle K strings strung through the body will have the full gauge on the saddle, you will lose the advantage of the tapering.

http://octave4plus.com/ are fully custom so could design a set for you with the taper in the correct place if the Galveston is through body stringing only

i know their site says that, but i have a set of the 166 balanced strings on a gibson grabber, thats thru body and they work perfectly, and it actually helps with the intonation big time being tapered.

not really sure why they say they dont work, unless something is horribly wrong with what im doing and im unaware, it seems to be pretty sweet haha!

The tapered section of Circle K strings is shorter than most brands, 1.625 inch from the edge of the ball-end to the point where the string starts to expand to it's full gauge, see technical drawing pdf here: http://www.circlekstrings.com/CKSIMA...rcleKspecs.pdf

This is for good reason, to minimise the length of tapered section between saddle and nut, reducing inharmonicity. Since through-body stringing creates more distance ffrom ball-end to saddle, there is more chance that the full gauge of the string will be sitting on the saddle instead of the tapered gauge.

I guess that some through-body strung basses have a short distance from ball-end to saddle, allowing Circle K's to work. I just looked at some Grabber photos, looks like this is the case.

You've all been incredibly helpful. I'll delve into your suggestions and see what I can find. I'll be back to reveal what I've uncovered.

Post-resolute comment: $100 is a lot for strings. Is it best to buy a new set or would I be fine buying solely the High C string.
