where to find heavy gauge extra long scale strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'd like to tune my 5 string Peavey down to drop C and tune the low B to a G but I can't find any strings that are extra long scale and have a heavey enough gauge to tune down. Will the DDT DR strings fit a 35" scale? Or can anyone point me in the direction of some good strings that will work here?

Another idea I had was finding lighter gauge strings and tuning them up so that the low B will be the C and tune the rest of the strings up as well. But I'm afraid that will destroy my neck. Anyone ever tried anything crazy like that?

So you're doing GCGCF? Does your bass have a top load bridge?

I'd suggest a set that resembles;

.158 .124 .084 .061 .043

My string company sells the right gauges - I just need to know a bit more about your bass and I can let you know what length.

Yea that's the tuning Im going for, GCGCF. My bass is a 35" scale so I need extra long scale strings. The strings are feed up through the underside of the bass as well, not sure if that's something you need to know or not. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks!

Most of the boutique string makers will let you spec out a custom set in any sizes they make, or make you a new size for a few dollars more.

Scale length doesn't give the whole story, though, and "extra long" varies by manufacturer.

Specifically, he wants to know about your bridge and possibly your headstock - the other lengths of strings that don't vibrate, but are necessary to make sure the string fits. What model Peavey do you have?

Bridges can vary greatly, some having more than an inch and a half between the saddle and the ball-end of the string. Since Skip's strings taper at 1.625" from the ball-end, they may not fit most through-body bridges and may require top-loading.

The bass I'm working with here is a Peavey grind 5 string. Here's a link in case you want

http://www.samash.com/webapp/wcs/sto...al-_-PG5BXPNTB

I've looked in a bunch of different places but I haven't been able to find anyone who will let me custom order a set of strings.

I can't see the bridge on the page you link to - take a pic of your bridge and post it - I can let you know if my strings will work for you.
