Where to get HEAVY gauge strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
My bassist recently bought a 5 string Victor Bailey Model Fender, and we're having a bit of a problem with the tuning/tension on the B-string. We tune down 3 half steps (Which worked fine on a 105 on his 4 string, and the "top four" of his 5 string) but the B string is a bit floppy. He currently has a set of Blue Steels on there. Is there perhaps a heavier gauge anyone can recommend? Thanks,

-Jeff

Maybe try www.musiciansfriend.com . They carry alot of strings and I've seen that they sell SOME individual strings, not sure how many or what brand, never really needed just one string. But maybe they'll have something? I'm not sure, just a suggestion.

Thanks, I read through the FAQ to to make sure I didn't tick anyone off, I know it can put off a few people in some other forums I frequent. I'll look into some extended ranges and see if Musiciansfriend.com has any singles. Thanks again!

Unless the guitar players in that band are playing downtuned 7 strings guitars with low bs. with a five string bass he shouldn't even have to downtune he's already capable of going lower than a downtuned guitar. he's just going to play with different fingerings...

Well, we have some tricky tapping on that low B in that tuning, it corresponds well to what I play on my E. That and some octave jumping that's pretty fun.

I don't know whether or not they make a 5-string set, but Knucklehead "Chunky" Doublewides are absolutely massive.
I had them on my P-bass for a while. They were so huge compared to the old strings that I got a horrible upbow, but with a few adjustments they sounded amazing.
E string was .115 -- again, I dunno if they make a 5 string set.

However, individual strings might be the way to go.
