Every time I start to think I need a new/different bass I should just put on a new set of strings. Tight, focused, deep...and only $45.

And $45 is even expensive for strings! I can get a new bass sound for about $25!

I agree, we all obsess over our sound, sometimes needlessly, and often we can do a lot with a little. I recently met a beginner bassist who had an awful sounding entry level Squier. (Very tinny) I had a used set of EB Flats which I bought here for $5. We put them on his bass and it was transformed into a full sounding instrument.
