I wanted a P style bass cheap so I bought a Squier Affinity P largely because of things I'd read here. Then I got a good price on an SD 1/4 Pounder pickup. I had some 500k pots laying around so I switched them with the stock ones. On a whim I strung it with Rotosound Flats, 50-110 (same guages as the Steve Harris set). The initial really bright phase of the strings seems to have settled down and this thing is suprisingly powerful. Really aggressive, but without the zinginess on top.
