I don't know why that would happen. My first set of JF344s was on my P bass for over 8 years and just settled into a warm, rich sound but still with the right amount of mids and highs. I didn't really need to change them when I did, but I had a new spare set of T.I.s and figured 8 years was long enough. Pretty inexpensive-about less than $8 a year. The new set has been on for a couple months now and they sound wonderful as usual.I also have them on 3 other basses. I sold the J type bass last fall with 2 year old T.I. flats on it. They were a selling point. The guy who bought it fell in love with the sound and feel.
I never had any problem with a "nasal" sound or any ugly sounds as long as I kept my chops up. Bad technique and sloppy playing can get you some bad sounds. I clean my strings once or twice a week, either with a bit of rubbing alcohol or with GHS Fast Fret and a soft cotton cloth.
I love the sound of these strings and prefer them over all the other flats I've used over many years. I like the sound and the slightly lower tension.
I don't slap or tap though and don't like the Jaco sound.
