i had a set of rounds on my bass and the D string popped. Does this only happen to rounds, or both rounds and flats??? i dont slap, just finger style, and i don't pluck hard at all. I also am thinking bout getting a set of flats on my ibanez....should i get a back up set, or will one be enough???

Any kind of string can break. Sometimes it's due to a manufacturing defect, sometimes it's due to a rough or sharp spot on a bridge saddle, sometimes it's because you angered the string gods. Carry backup strings to the gig, and don't worry about the type of string. If the new D string breaks, check to see if there is a rough edge on the bridge saddle.

I would guess there is a sharp place somewhere on the bridge, I have been playing 10 years with a medium to heavy touch, and havent broken a string yet (the string gods favor me ). Not saying it cant happen when nothings wrong, as friends break them occasionaly. But if they were new strings something is probably wrong, maybe a defective string or a burr on the bridge.

Flats should last a very long time if theres nothing wrong with the bass, or strings (much the same as rounds come to think of it!), they are stiffer so may (?) resist the urge to break a bit better.

I keep 2 sets of strings in my all my gig bags. The first is a 5er set of Rotosound Jazz 77s (flats) and the second is a 6 string set of DR Black Beauties. That way if any of my strings pop on any of my basses I have a string to replace it, regardless of what bass I'm using.

I wouldn't dream of not having spares at a gig. I take a spare bass too. I have broken countless strings, nothing wrong with my bridge, I just play hard sometimes.

At what point along its length did the D string break?

FWIW, I've reviewed those tables of string tension vd gauge....looks like the D string is usually the highest tension of the set oddly enough.

I'm guessing you dont mean string breaking in the normal way then (snapping)? And the wrap has come off some how? There wont be any way of fixing it either way, and seeing as they are old strings now, you wont be able to take them back where you bought them. So its new string time!
