Why aren't there any other Nylon core strings???

Sign in to disble this ad
Does anyone know why there aren't any nylon core flatwound, or tapewound strings? It seems to me that if nylon core strings are for helping to get that double bass tone, then making a tapewound or flatwound nylon core would be best, rather than the roundwounds that TI and anyone else makes (which are great themselves).

Is there some kind of reason that there aren't any? Is it structurally impossible to make or something? Or is there just not enough demand for them maybe?

Nylon core wouldn't work very well with magnetic pickups. If you mean nylon wound flats, RotoSound makes them. Nice strings, but not my cup of tea. I like the growl of nickel rounds.

No, I mean nylon core strings. For acoustic and piezo equipped basses. Like TI's Acousticore strings.

I know all about nylon wrapped strings, I've got a set of Status-Graphite tapewound strings on my Ken Lawrence

Those do not have a nylon core, last time I checked

You might want to ask about this on the URB forum, and look around for classical guitar/guitarron sets that you might be able to adapt for bass.

The TI AB34x sets were designed in cooperation with Rick Turner for his Renaissance piezo-only basses. IMO, It is pretty amazing that they make them at all, being that the demand is fairly miniscule. Fantastic strings though.

I thought the nylon filament referred to the core. Sorry 'bout that. Whatever is in the core of those strings it makes them feel like rubber bands.

Along the original intent of this thread, I have a serious jones for a 34"/35" scale, ball end version of the Eurosonic URB strings. They have a filament core, and a polymide wrap, and feel fantastic. They are the closest thing to a flatwound non-metallic string I have ever played.

They would be amazing on a ABG or a piezo thinline.

I had another thread around here somewhere about using URB strings on an acoustic (or electric w/piezos) bass. With nylon/gut strings, it might be possible to just tie a big knot in one end so it would stay in the bridge. Haven't tried it yet though. URB strings = $

WEED WACKER here we come. That has been the low budget choice for URB players looking for something different. Swage/superglue your own ball end on there and have at it.

La Bella makes a set, nylon core with brass winding, much less $$$ than TI's. I haven't tried them.

Yeah, I know. LaBella makes a standard set (only 4-strings) and a piccolo set (which I have) of brass wound nylon cores. And TI makes 4, 5, and 6-string sets (which I also have).

But I want nylon core strings that have other windings...

The only reasonable answer is to start your own string manufacturing company.

Years ago I used "Cat Gut - catgut" LaBellas. Thought they were the cat's meow at the time (pun intended).
Don't know if they're still made though.
Maybe Google "Catgut guitar strings?"
No balls on the ends, had to knot them.

Hmm. Were they made for bass guitar specifically though?

My 2 Cents

I have for the first time in 30 years of playing Used the Acouticore Thomastik-Infeld Nylon Core Strings on my 5 string ABG with Piezo PU and I have never ever played or heard a better set of strings. I highly recomend these strings.
