why do strings have silk wrappings?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been experimenting with different brands of bass strings to find ones I like. But I have noticed that some brands have those silk wrappings on them and some dont. So what is the purpose of that silk wrapping? To me it does nt seem like it has any purpose if some manufactures put it on while others dont.

Elixers have them for extended life, although some people say they sound dead to start with...

I know the people who have like acid sweat use them because they'll last a few weeks longer than regular strings (which isn't too long for them in the first place)

I think he means at the ends of the strings? The elixers have a coating on the entire string no?

I've often wondered the same thing about the wrappings at the ends.

On most of the silkless strings, you may find that the winding of the string on the tuning gear end spaces out, even as far as feeling sharp. The silk is mostly to protect the metallic parts of your bass from lots of friction and grinding.
