Why don't I ever listen to my own advice?

I don't believe it!

I wrote on this forum that the best strings for acoustic playing, on an ABG were a Flatwounds, for various sonic reasons.....

So what do I go and do?

I got Roto Bronzewounds for my Ortega bass!

29 pounds!, 0.45 so they pull the neck, and I don't what to adjust the truss rod!

My bass has a very deep tone, but put a string on it that advertises its self, and has metal that gives "Zing"???????

You don't need "Zing" on an Acoustic Bass you need "Thud"!

Gracious God, I AM THICK!

Conned by marketing! "We make acoustic Guitar strings in Bronze, so we'll do the same for an ABG"

So why I did I do it?

Well the strings were old so, although they were 0.45 Bronze D'Addario, they weren't so Hight tension, thus they didn't pull on the neck, and they weren't "Zingy"

No I won't put tape wounds on, as they are not loud enough acoustically.......

And anyhow Double Basses have been played for centuries with steel cored Flats! There must be a reason?

So why am I so upset?

Just so you're aware, double basses have been played for centuries with gut strings. Steel strings are a pretty recent innovation.

Not quite.... Steel cored Flatwounds have spanned the last 12 years and beyond!

(in the world of upright where basses over 200 years old, that is a recent occurrence).

Look on the "bright" side, you now have a set of strings to use when you will be in an un-amplified acoustic situation, where flatwounds wont cut through nearly as well as those rounds.

With a bass, keep in mind it may sound "bright" near you, but in front of you fifteen feet, it sounds dull...

Maybe I'll have to test it recording.......

The other thing is that the tension on the neck....... The bow is irritating me.... it is small but there....

As to the brightness I'm only playing acoustically in a sitting room......

What kind of flats were on there before hand?

On this particular bass I've had d'addarrio, came with the bass, and then these rotosounds..... But before on another ABG, I had thomastik jazz bass flats...

any string is going to be high in tension next to the T-I Jazz Flats!

The difference shouldnt be that much between chromes and the rounds depending on the gauge you had.

Strings may just need to settle in a little?

I put D'addario Chromes on my ABG. They sound very nice, and play well.

Well all I can say is WOW!
It is good to know that 12 years is NOT considered recent in the evolution of bass.
After all the bass was invented by Leo Fender.
Before that only tubas and grunting were used for bass. Nothing with strings to be sure.
High school history now includes Y2K. That was at least a whole 12 years ago.

No I had d'addario bronze, and then rotosound bronze.....

Depends on what you call "recent". Audiovox invented the first electric bass guitar in the 30's and it used metal wound strings. Leo Fender created the first commercially successful electric bass in the early 1950's and it used metal wound strings.

A history of 80 years of metal bass strings since the 1930's isn't just "yesterday".

I trust you are referring to the TRUSS rod, right??
