Okay... now I'm sold. Treena - I love that sound. Sweet - I'm getting some flats today.

what do flats sound like when using a pick instead of your fingers?

If you can get a copy of the Beach Boys Pet Sounds album you can hear Carol Kaye playing flats with a pick. Get attack without the overtones you would get playing with a pick using rounds.

Fender stainless flats, a pick and a muting technique (foam under the bridge, the pinky side of your picking hand ...) is a real percussive sound with very little harmonic content beyond the fundamental. I use that a lot in pop and some blues settings. I think of my bass as a 'kick drum and pitch control' and just lock with the kick and away we go to 'drive-land'.

SuperSluggard, flats using a pick sound ... still pick style with the sharp attack bit not so biting as with rounds. Hard to describe. There must be some you could try in your area?
Yep, the next set of strings I get will be flats.

I've got TI Flats on my Fender P Bass, and the sound/tone is fantastic. and it sits perfectly in the mix in each of the 3 very different bands I am in: a loud rock band, a funk band and a reggae band
