Depends on what you like. Steels are brighter, but harder on your fingers. Nickel is warmer and IMO nicer sounding. Take your bass into the store you plan to purchase the strings and ask them to tell you which size is on your bass. Get those. Strings go by the scale length of your bass, so you can measure first also. Fender 7150's have a nice BR sound on my Jazz. If you want D'addario strings Chromes are nice.

As far as stainles vs. nickel it really depends on what you like and with what bass and what amp. For example with my old amp an svt-4 I was doing anything I could to get a bright sound, using new stainless strings a preamp, everything. Then a bought a Svt-cl and was disgustingtly bright. so now i use nickels and let them break in with no preamp whatsoever and it's the best tone i ever had.

Also string gauges affect a lot more things than how easy they are to press. the lighter the gauge the easier they will be to press and bend because they're going to be more floppy. On the other hand thinner strings produce less bass and that sound won't fit everyone. since well playing bass is about a fat supporting tone

For punk I like to have a bright cutting sound that comes up in the mix, so I would use stainless steel.

Well for Bad Religion you have to use nickel but for Social Distortion you need steel.
