Will my awesome plan for string gauges work?

Sign in to disble this ad
I need some new strings. I have a 5. I uptune (l to h) C# G# c# F# B.

The plan:

Since the highest four strings are only a half step down from the highest four strings of a six stringer, I was thinking I'll just get a 6 string set and put the highest four on my highest 4, and put the low B string as my low C# string.

There's a set on eBay that I want, it's .030 .045 .065 .085 .105 .125

So I was thinking i'd use the 30, 45, 65 and 85 for the B, F#,c# and G# respectively, throw out the 105, and use the 125 for my low C#.

What do you guys think the tension will be like? I've had a 125 tuned to C#, its a nice tension, I'm not sure if the other ones will be a bit too floppy though. Thoughts? Ideas?

On a completely unrelated Issue, My previous strings were Di'addario ProSteels, which were fantastic and i highly recommend them.

I wanted nickel strings, but the eBay guy I bought them off accidentally advertised his new 'Steels as nickels, I bought them, and then he told me. the best mess-up of my life, hahaha!! I thought they would be insanely bright, but they had so much punch! I put my old EB nickels on and they sound like poo compared to the PSs. Just thought I'd share my experience if anyone is considering trying out ProSteels or steels in general. I recommend it!

Thanks for listening guys!

Cionsider a set that is something like;

.118 .080 .058 .043 .031

A .125 might be tight, but if that's your thing consider gauges like;

.124 .084 .061 .043 .031

It will work very well, the tensions will be roughly equal. B strings in most sets are usually loose, which is why a .125 at C# feels so good. Also ADGC strings in most sets are usually tight, which is why they will work so well detuned by a semitone, they will not be floppy.
