I assume you are talking about a Stingray or Sterling?

I've been using 95-40's for awhile now. My girlfriend hasn't noticed anything unusual, so you should be fine.

I just switched a month ago after using 45-105 for over 30 years.
Just made them hang down a little farther.

So they're a bit looser, then?

i use 40-95 exclusively and always will. Well maybe one day I will find something even smaller that I like.

Yeah-
I found myself using Standard guage Rotos just out of habit.
At the urging of Jeff Berlin, I got some 40-100 guage to try.
Absolutly loving them!

(Dunlop SS 100-40) great strings IMO

How would that even happen?? Honestly, nobody besides bass players will know what a .100 string, or a .040 string is. Use them, love them and get over it!!

They are so much easier to play.
They act and sound more like a "string" than a solid steel bar.

its ONLY about playability --- i notice a loss of fullness with the lighter strings; and they went on a bass with thick sounding j-style pickups. i play 109-49 Labella flats on the other bass i record with most of the time. have never gone lower than 105-45 before this. i could feel Willie Weeks' gaze of dissappointment when i strung up the light-gaugers

I'm not picky at all. Of my two main basses, one is strung 45-105 and the other is 30-90. Both feel good.

All I can say is keep and eye on your balls, pay close attention to them. If they start shrinking switch to heavy gauge, then get a pair of shades and leather jacket and act like nothing happened, like all the old guys do .

I used 40-100 for a long time and loved them

I recently switched to 50-105 because my band was using a lower tuning and the E string was sounding a little weak with the 100

but that's just imo

Will your balls get smaller?

In a word...yes.

Well, maybe not your balls, but your tone may get smaller. I spent a fair amount of time testing the "bigger is better" theory for strings, and for me at least, it was true.

I used the same bass (a Fender American P) same brand of strings (D'Addario XL's) and same amp to keep the variables as consistent as possible.

I strung a set of 40-100, 45-105, and 55-110. The 40-100 sounded and felt fine to me, but the 45's definitely had more heft to the tone, and the 55's more still.

Tension is higher on the heavier strings, but I found that I could get the action a bit lower because of that and I actually preferred the feel once I got used to them.

This stuff is SO subjective, but I'm digging the heavy guage strings and I feel like my sound is fuller and more powerful with them.
