The finish on my bass is just oil so I'm not sure what to use without damaging it.

But a lot depends on your body chemistry. Some people's sweat just seems to rot strings, some has no effect at all. Diet, hygiene and genetics each play a role.

Those cotton boxer/briefs work well too, but I try to use the leg only...

I don't use it for the finish though...I wipe down the body at home with old t shirts that I've cut the printing off of, and use some Stew Mac guitar polish.
