Wow! Finding the right match ...

I just went and did some string changing on my basses (Kinal MK21 5, G&L SB-2). I was in the studio recording a demo for my band and the studio guy is a fabulous bass player. He had two Kubicki X-factor basses there - very cool basses. He let me play them and I could hardly get a good note out of them - clackity clack! When he played them they sounded so freakin' good - rich creamy goodness. So, I decided to set up my basses with lighter strings and much lower action and play with a much lighter touch - emulating his style. Didn't put much thought into it - just got some light gauge stainless strings took out the tools.

That was a coupla months ago and my touch has gotten lighter and am digging it. Back to the point, though. I found myself not liking the D and E strings with this set up on both basses. After trying a coupla different sets on both, I found matches that totally thrilled me. Sadowsky flats on the SB-2 and Sunbeams (45-65-85-105-130) on the Kinal. The tension was higher than the light steel strings, so I was able to lower the action even more. I can't believe the difference! The SB-2 just started grunting out amazingly fat and gritty tones and the slapping on the Kinal almost became effortless. The biggest difference was definitely the Kinal - that baby just opened up! I found myself pretty unhappy with the neck pickup until this string change.

Being one prone to GAS far exceeding my budget, this development has done a great job of curbing my GAS. Now I've got a four string that is a vintage tone machine and five string that does the modern tone so well. I don't need another bass! hehehe (though I find myself wanting a Sadowsky Metro 4 very badly.)

Change your strings!

Awesome for you man. I had a similar experience with Lakland Skyline BG. When I first bought it (used) it was strung with some kind of regular steels, which I didn't like either the sound or feels of. So I put on a set of DR Black Beuities. Better but not great. And now after almost six months I decided to try flats, so I ordered a set of d'addario chromes 105-85-70-50. Now I'm in tone heaven. So to all Bob Glaub owners who haven't tried flats do so!!
