Wow! Just got my 1st set of flatwounds & love them!

I've been playing roundwounds for nearly 30 years & decided to try something a li'l different. Bought a set of Rotosound flats (since that's what the local store had in stock), slapped them on my least expensive bass (Epi T-Bird) and gave them a try.
All I can say is WOW! That was a lot of fun! Started playing & didn't want to stop, even though it was the least favorite of my basses.
I don't think I'll use them all the time, but it was definitely a blast to use them to change things u a bit.

they're quite a bit less bright than roundwounds. u can still slap with them, but the tone is a bit darker. they felt kind of "slinky" if that makes any sense. they're most definitely worth trying out, I'm really having a blast with them so far!

Funny. Last Saturday, on a lark, I put a set of D'Addario Chromes on my early 90's Carvin LB-70, which I had modded a few years ago. (Actually, it was falling apart!) Since the mod the bass didn't have the "charm" it had previously so I didn't play it much. Then I stuck on the flats and I haven't been able to put the thing down! Like you said, I don't think I'd put them on my main basses "yet" but they sound really good on my "wife."

Thinking of going in the half round direction instead of a huge jump from rounds all the way to flats. Want to try the Ken Smith slick rounds.

Among flats, rounds and inbetweens, each has its attractions. It's interesting to hear a lot of folks who probably started when rounds were the standard discover flats. Plus flats have come a long, long way since the day. Good to hear there's still new stuff to try. A lot has to do with the effects, EQs, etc you use. For instance, I like flats, for any number of reasons, but mostly the livelier flats, like Pyramids, GHS Brite Flats, and the like. But I use a very good parametric EQ, so I can get a lot of highs and some very cool high mids out of the flats when I want. I'm not a slapper so this works for me.
