I'm almost at the 20 year mark myself. I tried everything else and just found the string that works for me. They're remarkably consistent and I've never gotten a bad string right out of the packet.

Anyone remember the strings that D'Addario made with the different color wraps for each string? They don't make them anymore - I bought them, hated 'em, send them to D'Addario and they sent me 2 sets of XL to replace them.

Thumbs up

I've tried many other strings but I find that nickel XLs give me more of what I want than any other roundwound I've tried. They have a detailed midrange that lasts, even when they're really old. Doesn't hurt that they're dirt cheap and available everywhere. I also like the fact that they moved to minimal (and sealed) packaging some years ago.

I have to say my only complaint is this silly color coding. If you can't tell the difference between a .040 and a .060 without color coding, you should go take some lessons. On bridges where the ball end is exposed, it looks really odd.

+1 the XL are cheap, readily available, sound great and long lasting (to me at least).

put em on my schecter stilletto studio 5 and will again when replacement is needed. love 'em.

oh, yeah, fender flats on my jazz, though.

Yeah, it does tend to look a little like kindergarten when you're looking at a set of bass strings, but it can be really hard sometimes to tell guitar strings apart. The difference between a B and high E in a 10-46 set, for example, is three thousandths of an inch; the two strings are practically identical to the naked eye. The rest of the strings, though usually discernable between each other, can still be tough. In that case the color coding helps immensely.

They just kept the same system for bass strings to make it that much easier to tell strings apart. It's also a trademark; I don't think you see any other brand of strings with the color coding, so when you have rainbow ball ends, people in the know will know you're using D'Addario.

i like the colours sticking out of my bridge

as to the original post. Bought them as they were a really good deal on ebay and love them. They made a world of difference to my sound and as a bonus they are cheap.

I won't change

I've been using them for a long time as well. I go back and forth with them and DR Hi Beams when I get a bug for a new tone. But, I always love putting the XLs back on and hearing that deep low end and that crunch. BTW, I know this is about D'Addario, but I had to mention this: DR has great customer service. I once bought a set and one of the strings was dead. I emailed them and they sent me a new set - no questions asked. That's pretty amazing to me.

20db pad - The strings you are talking about were called D'Addario Slowounds. I LOVE them. They are the only string that works well on my Hyak bass. My Hyak does not have a truss rod, so the low tension of this string works for me. I hope I can find some more un-used sets to hoard them for the future.
