Anyone remember the strings that D'Addario made with the different color wraps for each string? They don't make them anymore - I bought them, hated 'em, send them to D'Addario and they sent me 2 sets of XL to replace them.

They have a detailed midrange that lasts, even when they're really old. Doesn't hurt that they're dirt cheap and available everywhere. I also like the fact that they moved to minimal (and sealed) packaging some years ago. |

If you can't tell the difference between a .040 and a .060 without color coding, you should go take some lessons. On bridges where the ball end is exposed, it looks really odd. |

The difference between a B and high E in a 10-46 set, for example, is three thousandths of an inch; the two strings are practically identical to the naked eye. The rest of the strings, though usually discernable between each other, can still be tough. In that case the color coding helps immensely.
They just kept the same system for bass strings to make it that much easier to tell strings apart. It's also a trademark; I don't think you see any other brand of strings with the color coding, so when you have rainbow ball ends, people in the know will know you're using D'Addario. |

as to the original post. Bought them as they were a really good deal on ebay and love them. They made a world of difference to my sound and as a bonus they are cheap.
I won't change

I go back and forth with them and DR Hi Beams when I get a bug for a new tone. But, I always love putting the XLs back on and hearing that deep low end and that crunch. BTW, I know this is about D'Addario, but I had to mention this: DR has great customer service. I once bought a set and one of the strings was dead. I emailed them and they sent me a new set - no questions asked. That's pretty amazing to me.

They are the only string that works well on my Hyak bass. My Hyak does not have a truss rod, so the low tension of this string works for me. I hope I can find some more un-used sets to hoard them for the future.
